John Deere 40 Serial Numbers
Here are the serial numbers for the various styles of John Deere 40 tractors. Please note there are two sets of numbers. One set indicates the calendar break of the serial numbers - tractors built from January 1 to December 31 of that year. The other set indicates the model year breaks of the serial numbers - tractors built from August 1 to roughly July 15 of the following year.
The John Deere corporation manufactures dozens of styles and models of lawn tractors for both residential and commercial use. Their products are all identified by a serial number, which Deere also refers to as a product identification number, PIN, or Lawn Mower ID No. Depending on the type of lawn tractor, its features and age of manufacture, the serial number can be found in several different. Note-A sales bulletin that shows until approximately November 25 of 1968 that the 1968 type codes were used, meaning the first few 1969 models may have 1968 type codes, but they would have all the 1969 model features. John Deere Waterloo Works recently changed from a 13-digit large tractor serial number to a 17-digit serial number. To better understand each position in the 17-digital serial number, the chart below lists the position number, use of that position and what the position means, specific to large tractors (7030 Series Large-Frame, 8R/8RT Series and 9030 Series Tractors). To determine the model year of your 5000 series tractor, locate the 13 digit identification number (tractor serial number). It is located on a black metal tag on the left side of the tractor, above the front axle.
Similar to the way cars are built, the model year of the tractor was usually introduced prior to the calendar year. So a 40 built in October 1954 is really a 1955 model.
